Pune is the second largest city in Maharashtra state, after Mumbai. Research institutes of information technology, education, management and training attract students in pune.

With the fall of the Marathas in the year 1818 and establishment of the British Raj, Pune came to be known as 'the Oxford of the East'. The name was drawn from the fact that Pune was home to higher education institutes and research centers even during the pre-independence era.
