Machilipatnam is a popular tourist destination well known for Kalamkari fabrics and Kalahasti decorations. It is believed that Machlipatnam derived its name owing to the construction of a gateway to the town decorated with eyes of a fish (also called Machili in Hindi). Machilipatnam is known for its Kalamkari textiles and paintings created using vegetable dyes. As a kalam (pen) is used in the technique of painting.
